Top 10 Activities for Kids at the 2014 South African Book Fair

From the grizzly Gruffalo to artsy book crafting workshops, there is no end to the plethora of educational, fun and not-to-be-missed activities for children at the 2014 South African Book Fair.

Taking place from 13-15 June at the Cape Town International Convention Centre between 9 AM and 6 PM daily, children of all ages can immerse themselves in a virtual wonderland of books while adults take time to browse, chat to publishers and authors and pick up some great deals on a wide variety of books.

Here is a list of the exciting kids’ activities we have lined up for the South African Book Fair.

1. Learn all about turtles and tortoises at a puppet show brought to you by local experts in underwater entertainment the Two Oceans Aquarium.

2. Meet your favourite book character – The Gruffalo, Maisy, Wally, Babalela and others. You can also meet the real dog from Elizabeth Wasserman’s popular series Dogtective, William/Speurhond Willem.

3. Listen to some of SA’s best storytellers narrating a variety of all time favourite tall tales and short stories.

4. Do join us for a posh tea party with the classic The Tiger Who Came to Tea.

5. For the creative child at heart, there will be colouring in activities throughout the day.

6. Teens have the opportunity to join a writing workshop and learn how to spin a story with style.

7. Win a prize for dressing up as a pirate or princess.

8. Design your own underpants!

9. Make your favourite children’s book come to life with a book-inspired craft to take home.

10. Indulge in a brand new book for your kids and cuddle up in the children zone for your own family storytelling session – the best entertainment of all.

Imaginations will soar and reading will become a favourite pastime at the South African Book Fair. According to programme director Batya Green-Bricker: “The uniqueness of the South African Book Fair is the depth and breadth of the events on offer. Children’s favourite book characters will come to life and parents can share their love of books with their children.”

Tickets can be purchased online via the South African Book Fair website www.southafricanbookfair.co.za or at the door, with discounts available for Pick n Pay Smart Shopper Card Holders when purchased online. Children under the age of 18 receive free entry.

Ticket prices are as follows:
Full Price Ticket: R50.00
PnP SmartShopper: R25.00
Pensioner Ticket: R20.00
Children under 18: Free
