The panel addressed issues around thinking in Humanities and the Social Sciences, specifically the function and meaning of the academy. According to Suren Pillay, one of the editors of Peace vs Justice?, a key part of this is how we understand transformation and the transformation of knowledge production in South Africa; whether transformation is synonymous with de-racialisation or, as in post-independence debates, with decolonisation.

Quote of the hour: “What is wrong with what we know about the academy of South Africa if it is dominated by a single racial group?” – Suren Pillay
